BBB - Better Business Bureau
What Is the BBB?
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) operates as a network of businesses across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, under the umbrella of the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB). As a non-profit organization, the BBB aims to foster trust and loyalty between consumers and businesses.
How Does the BBB Help Consumers?
The BBB assists consumers by handling complaints related to business transactions. If a consumer files a complaint, the BBB will investigate and take appropriate action if necessary. Consumers can also report scams through the BBB Scam Tracker or file a report with organizations such as the FTC, the state attorney general, or the Consumer Protection Agency.
It is important to note that the BBB does not handle employer-employee disputes, pricing issues, or other professional policy matters. For such cases, complaints should be directed to the appropriate authorities.
8 Steps to Avoid a Scam
- Never send money to someone you haven’t met in person. This includes wire transfers, prepaid debit cards, and gift cards, which are difficult to trace.
- Avoid opening email attachments from unknown sources. These could contain viruses designed to steal personal information.
- Be cautious of caller ID and website fraud. Scammers can fake official seals and create realistic-looking websites.
- Only shop on secure websites. Look for “HTTPS” in the URL to ensure a secure transaction. The BBB website can help verify a company’s authenticity.
- Beware of online dating scams. Scammers use social platforms to gain trust before attempting fraud.
- Take time before making decisions. Scammers pressure victims into acting quickly by claiming an offer is available for a limited time only.
- Use secure payment methods for online purchases. Avoid prepaid gift cards and cash transactions. Instead, use a bank credit card or other trusted payment methods.
- Adjust your privacy settings on social media. Share personal information cautiously, as scammers monitor social media for potential victims.
By staying informed and cautious, consumers can better protect themselves from scams and fraudulent activity.
